This blog was created for students teachers to reflect on their teaching experience at school and share this experience with one another. As each shares and collaborates on best practices, successes as well as mistakes in teaching ESL, it is hoped that student teachers will benefit from such collaborative reflections on this blog platform and continue to appreciate the use of such a platform for further collaborations even after Teaching Practice.

Dava's Lesson at Taman Petaling Girls' School

Dava began with the comic strip on the board as Set Induction and then a Pre Reading discussion on Insomnia.  I wish the comic strip was bigger for all to see, however she read aloud the dialogues for her students when she realised they couldnt see.
She then distributed a reading text for all. The thing is she made a few students read aloud para by para. Not only were some students' voice very soft, they also couldn't pronounce some words correctly. Perhaps, Dava can have a Speaking lesson next time focusing on pronunciation of words: vowels etc. For a reading lesson, the focus should be on reading silently.
Here's one student who was very soft...Dava had to coax her into reading further...the others? Well, they were 'unentertained' when this happened.
She distributed a vocab activity as well. Before students got a chance to read silently on their own, she began asking for answers from the class. She was good in explaining and had a clear voice. She was stern yet encouraging BUT she should've let her students read silently on their own and perhaps discuss in pairs answers to the task.
And her single period lesson was too short for what she had prepared for the class. Here's the text. It IS very long. By the time the bell rang, they haven't gone through the whole text. Maybe Dava can shorten it to fit a single period lesson.
This second task wasn't even carried out. No time. Maybe for the next lesson? Time management is important here. Overall, when discussion happened about Insomnia, students enjoyed her lesson and laughed at her jokes. I like that. However, Dava can further improve as a teacher, just like the rest of you. Hope you can learn from her lesson, here. Good Luck!
